Treating patients of all ages in Ness and Stornoway, Isle of Lewis
Chiropractic care can help with a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. Click any tile to read the full article.
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek chiropractic care. Whether it's a dull ache in your lower back or sharp pain that limits your movement, chiropractic treatment can identify the cause and provide lasting relief.
Neck stiffness, shoulder tension, and referred pain down the arm are often connected — all relating back to the cervical spine. Chiropractic assessment identifies the root cause so treatment targets the real source of your discomfort.
Lower limb pain doesn't always originate where you feel it. Misalignment in the pelvis or lumbar spine can alter your gait and place uneven stress on hips, knees, ankles, and feet — creating pain throughout the entire kinetic chain.
Chronic muscle aches, tension headaches, and widespread stiffness are often signs that the nervous system is under stress. Chiropractic care addresses the underlying spinal cause rather than simply masking muscle symptoms.
Pregnancy places significant demands on the spine and pelvis. Chiropractic care is safe and effective throughout pregnancy, helping to relieve pelvic girdle pain, lower back ache, and the discomfort that comes with a rapidly changing centre of gravity.
Rebecca qualified with a Master's degree in Chiropractic from Surrey University in 2004, going on to work at a busy clinic in East London before establishing her own successful private practice in Leicestershire in 2007.
Her journey into chiropractic was a personal one. A back injury led her to seek chiropractic care, and the experience — both the relief it gave her and the understanding it unlocked about her own body — inspired her to retrain and make that same difference for others.
Over Christmas 2023, Rebecca and her family relocated to the Isle of Lewis, bringing high-quality chiropractic care to the Western Isles. She treats patients of all ages, including children and pregnant women, from two clinic locations in Ness and Stornoway.
Your first appointment is a thorough consultation. Here is what to expect.
A comprehensive discussion of your current complaint, medical history, past injuries, and any relevant lifestyle factors.
Assessment of your posture, reflexes, and muscle strength, alongside orthopaedic and neurological tests where appropriate.
X-rays or other diagnostic imaging arranged if clinically necessary to fully understand your condition.
Checking for any serious underlying conditions that may require referral to your GP or hospital.
A clear verbal explanation of your diagnosis, what is causing your symptoms, and what a realistic course of treatment looks like.
An individually tailored treatment plan designed around your specific needs — or a referral if chiropractic is not the right option for you.
If you choose to proceed, your first treatment begins during the same appointment — no need to come back before you start feeling better.
Chiropractic care typically progresses through three phases, each building on the last.
The initial phase focuses on reducing your pain and symptoms. Visits are more frequent while your body stabilises, with frequency and duration depending on your age, condition, and lifestyle.
Once pain has subsided, this phase allows complete healing of the underlying muscle and soft tissue damage. Visit frequency reduces as your body strengthens, supported by exercise and self-care guidance.
Optional periodic check-ups to maintain your results, catch emerging problems early, and preserve the improvements made during treatment. How far you take your care is always your choice.

Treatment is usually painless unless an area is inflamed. The clicking or popping sounds that sometimes occur during spinal manipulation are simply gas releasing from the joint — this is normal and harmless. Some patients experience mild, temporary muscle aches for a day or two after their first few sessions, similar to the feeling after exercise.
Discs cannot actually slip — they are firmly anchored between the vertebrae. However, trauma or wear can cause them to bulge, herniate, or in severe cases rupture. These conditions can cause significant pain and referred symptoms. Many patients with disc problems have avoided surgery through chiropractic care.
No. Every adjustment is individually tailored based on the patient's age, body type, the nature and severity of their condition, and how they respond to treatment. Gentle low-force techniques are available for children, elderly patients, and those with osteoporosis or other sensitivities.
Three main types of stress can cause spinal misalignment: physical stress (accidents, repetitive strain, poor posture, sleeping awkwardly), emotional stress (which causes muscle tension and guarding), and chemical stress (poor nutrition, dehydration, inflammatory conditions). Often a combination of all three is at play.
Yes. Surgery alters the mechanics of the spine and can create additional stress above and below the operated level. Chiropractic care can help manage this secondary stress and maintain function in the surrounding spinal segments. Your chiropractor will always take your surgical history fully into account.
Yes. Western Isles Chiropractic is registered with most major insurance companies. Please check with your insurer before booking to confirm your policy covers chiropractic treatment and whether a GP referral is required.
This varies depending on how long you have had the problem, its severity, your age, general health, and how closely you follow the advice given. After your initial examination, you will receive a clear estimate of the treatment course required and realistic expectations for recovery.
No. You are always in control of your care. Treatment progresses through pain relief, corrective, and optional maintenance phases — and you decide at each stage how far you want to go. Many patients choose periodic maintenance visits because they find it keeps them feeling better long-term, but this is entirely optional.
No. Chiropractors are Primary Health-Care Professionals — like dentists and opticians, you can refer yourself directly. No GP letter or waiting list required.
Chiropractic training is a full-time Master's level degree programme covering anatomy, physiology, neurology, biomechanics, diagnostics, radiology, and clinical practice — typically five years including a supervised internship. All UK chiropractors must be registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) to practise legally.
There are no shortcuts, but several factors significantly support recovery: maintaining good posture, getting adequate rest, eating a nutritious anti-inflammatory diet, staying hydrated, doing the prescribed exercises, and keeping your appointments. Your chiropractor will give you specific advice relevant to your condition.
Not at all. Chiropractic care is adapted to suit patients of all ages, including the elderly. Gentle techniques are used where appropriate, and treatment can be particularly beneficial for improving mobility, managing chronic pain, and addressing the stiffness associated with arthritis and degenerative conditions.
No. Self-manipulation (cracking your own back or neck) does not achieve the specific, controlled adjustment that a chiropractor performs. It tends to mobilise already hypermobile joints rather than the restricted ones that actually need attention, and over time can be counterproductive.
